Canada’s Boreal Forest is one of the world’s largest intact ecosystems and is a vital part of Canada’s environment, culture, and economy. It is also home to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and many oil and gas project sites.
This Energy Safety Canada course teaches workers in the Wood Buffalo Region to work safely in remote areas and wilderness habitats with wildlife, including bears.
Course Outline
This certificate is made up of 2 parts.
1. Wood Buffalo Wildlife Awareness
- Wildlife Standard
- Identifying wildlife habituation hazards
- Line-of-sight requirements
- Barbeque policy
- Reporting wildlife sightings
2. Wood Buffalo Wildlife Intermediate
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Wood Buffalo Wildlife Awareness
- Identifying characteristics of wildlife
- Expectations when working in areas close to wildlife habitats
- Regulatory requirements and reporting process
- Carrying deterrents and use of Bear Spray
- Respond to wildlife encounters
Practical Skills Assessment with inert bear spray is required for Suncor Sites.
Course Details
Length: Four hours
Certificate: Valid for three years
Prerequisite: None
Cost: $145.00 if completing theory and practical with WCFF.
Theory can be booked directly on the Energy Safety Canada Website.
Notes:
- For the online course, participants are given five attempts at the final exam; if a second attempt is required, it is strongly recommended to review all the course material before trying again.
- All registrations are booked through Energy Safety Canada
- Course can be accessed for 90 days from initial registration.
- Students who do not complete the course cannot be certified and registration fees will not be reimbursed, as per the Cancellation Policy.
