Medical First Responder Training (MFR)

Saga’s Medical First Responder (MFR) training course is designed for emergency responders such as firefighters, peace officers, search and rescue teams, community based volunteer groups, and company emergency response teams.

Fully aligned with Alberta Emergency Health Services (EHS) MFR Program requirements, this training course goes beyond Intermediate First Aid to cover MFR legislation, medical protocols, enhanced skills, High-Performance Basic Life Support, and practical skills review and evaluation.

Course Outline

Saga’s MFR program consists of 6 modules:

Module 1: Saga Intermediate First Aid.
Module 2: Alberta MFR Program Legislation and Policies.
Module 3: Saga High Performance Basic Life Support.
Module 4: MFR Enhanced Skills.
Module 5: Alberta MFR program Medical Control Protocols.
Module 6: Practical Skills Review and Evaluation.

  • All 6 modules are mandatory components of the Saga MFR program.
  • Theory components of all modules must be completed in sequence.
  • Practical skills components must be completed within 90 days of starting module 1.

Certification:
Upon successful completion of the Saga MFR training course, candidates are issued 3 certificates:

  1. Saga IFA certificate; expires every 3 years.
  2. Saga MFR certificate; expires with the IFA certificate. After expiry all 6 modules must be completed.
  3. Saga High-Performance Basic Life Support certificate; (Module 3) must be renewed annually in order to maintain a valid Saga MFR certificate. High-Performance Basic Life Support (Module 3) recertification includes review of theory online and one day of skills.

Upon request, Saga will provide training and issue certificates for Participating Agency medical protocols and procedures that have been authorized by the local medical director. These certificates will expire in no more than 3 years or as determined by the Participating Agency medical director.

Saga’s interactive blended learning format combines flexible online study with hands-on practical training—giving you confidence in advanced-level skills without the time and cost of traditional programs.

  • ~22 hours online + ~32 hours (4 X 8 hour days) in-person

Note: Saga’s Medical First Responder training course provides the same level of service as Alberta Emergency Health Service’s First Medical Responder training and Alberta OH&S Advanced First Aid.
