INTERMEDIATE FIRST AID WITH LEVEL C CPR & AED (Formerly Standard First Aid)
Western Canada Fire & First Aid’s first aid course is designed for those individuals who live or work in areas where the availability of emergency medical services may be delayed and for those trying to meet government regulations. First aid training is a great skill set that can be applied in various situations – at work and at home.
Western Canada Fire & First Aid’s Intermediate First Aid course follows the new CSA standards Z1210-17 and the “Alberta Plus” standards. This course includes level C CPR (Adult, child & Infant)
Course Outline
Principles of Workplace First Aid – Role and Responsibilities of Workplace First Aider, Administration of Medication, Workplace First Aid Kit and Equipment, Principles of Effective Communication, Workplace First Aider Safety and Personal Protection, Occupational Health and Safety
Management of Injured / ill Workers – Scene Management, Primary Survey, Secondary Survey, Ongoing Assessments
Airway Management – Basic Airway Management
Breathing Management – Respiratory System, Management of Respiratory Emergencies
Circulation Management – Circulatory System, Management of Cardiovascular Emergencies, Nervous System, Management of Shock, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Injury Management – Internal and External Hemorrhage, Ears, Eyes and Nose Injuries, Burn Management, Management of Musculoskeletal System Injuries
Medical Emergencies – Poison Management, Anaphylaxis, Diabetic Emergencies, Seizures, Stroke, Mental Health Emergencies, Environmental Injury and illness
Transportation Management – Transportation, Multiple Injured/ ill Worker Incidents and Transportation
Spinal and Neurological Emergencies Management – Spinal and Neurological Emergencies
Course Details
Length: 16 hours – Approximately 8 hours (both days)
Certificate: Valid for three years. Participants may re-certify with the 1 day recertification course any time before their current Intermediate First Aid certificate expires.
Prerequisite: Must be at least 14 years of age with consent of parent or guardian.

The Basic First Aid course at WCFF is a 1-day course designed for low hazard workers and provides essential first aid and CPR training. The Intermediate First Aid course is a more comprehensive 2-day program that builds upon the Basic First Aid course with more in-depth emergency response training and workplace first aid skills.
The Intermediate First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years. Before your current certificate expires, you can take a convenient 1-day recertification course to renew your certification.
The Intermediate First Aid Course covers essential skills for responding to workplace injuries and medical emergencies. The online portion includes workplace first aid, injured/ill worker management, airway management, breathing management, circulation management, injury management, medical emergencies, transportation management, and spinal and neurological emergency management.
To take the Intermediate First Aid Course, participants must be at least 14 years old. Participants under the age of 18 will also require parent or guardian consent before taking the course.
The Intermediate First Aid Course is ideal for people who work in industries where there is a higher risk of workplace injuries or medical emergencies. However, everyone can benefit from first aid training, as medical emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. Having the right skills can help you respond confidently when someone needs help.
