FAQs
No, you do not need a driver’s license to operate a forklift or be certified to drive a forklift.
The minimum age to operate a forklift depends on the jurisdiction. Some areas require operators to be properly trained and competent, while others allow individuals who are 16 or 17 years old to operate a forklift under the supervision of an experienced driver. In certain regions, operators must be at least 18 years old to legally operate a forklift.
Forklift certifications typically last for 3 years. After that period, operators are required to complete a re-evaluation that includes both a theoretical assessment and a practical skills evaluation to ensure they can continue operating a forklift safely and competently.
No previous experience is required. Forklift courses are available for both new operators and experienced operators who need certification or recertification.
Training may include sit-down forklifts, stand-up forklifts, walk-behind pallet jacks, and other powered lift truck classifications, depending on the course selected.
Students should bring work boots, weather-appropriate work clothing, and government-issued identification. Additional PPE may be required depending on the training facility.
Training commonly covers workplace hazards, safe lifting procedures, load stability, inspections, pedestrian awareness, emergency procedures, equipment maintenance, and Alberta safety legislation.
